FARGO — Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., will run for re-election, a campaign adviser said Wednesday.

There is no set date for a campaign kickoff, but campaign staff is laying the groundwork, said Don Larson, who also serves as the senator’s state director.

Hoeven will be up for re-election in 2016.

He was first elected in 2010 with 76 percent of the vote, becoming the first Republican senator from North Dakota since 1986.

His predecessor, Byron Dorgan, a Democrat, chose not to run for re-election.

In the Senate, Hoeven has made a name for himself as a leading proponent of the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast and would transport some oil from the Bakken formation in North Dakota. He’s also a proponent of the Fargo-Moorhead flood diversion and unmanned aircraft test sites in eastern North Dakota.

Before winning the Senate race against Tracy Potter, a Democratic state senator from Mandan, Hoeven was serving his third term as governor.
